Within the four main subjects of human intervention mentioned earlier, a number more have been added over the years.
We’ll mention some of them:
- fight against salinization
- keeping water discharge controllable in case of excessive surface water
- maintain the depth of the waterway
- promoting safety
One measure can, of course, have different functions. The construction of the weirs on the Lower Rhine, for example, has all four functions. A number of examples of human interventions are given below. First there is a list of measures in the Meuse, the Rhine, the IJssel and the Waal. Then, the functions that the measures may have worked out are illustrated by a number of examples.
